Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation meets President of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Colombia

Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika has met today President of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Colombia Francisco Javier Ricaurte Gomez. Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia to the Russian Federation Diego Jose Tobon also participated in the meeting.

Yuri Chaika welcomed the honoured guests underlying that the co-operation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Colombia was upheld by close positions on major international issues and by intention to enhance bilateral beneficial relations. The dialogue on combating organized crime, international terrorism, human trafficking and drug trafficking plays an important role in such relations.

The Russian Prosecutor General told his Colombian colleagues about the development of the Russian prosecutorial system having noted its increased active participation in international co-operation.

In his turn, President of the Colombian Supreme Court Francisco Javier Ricaurte Gomez thanked Yuri Chaika for his warm reception and described the structure and activities of the Colombian judicial authorities.

Moreover, Francisco Javier Ricaurte Gomez stated that the Supreme Court of the Republic of Colombia performs an important political function, i.e.: appointment of the Attorney General (from a list of candidates proposed by the President of the Republic of Colombia), participation in the establishment of the Administrative College of the Supreme Council of Judiciary, approval of a list of candidates to the posts of the Chairman of the Accounts Chamber (Control Chamber) and the Head of the General Investigative Department. The Supreme Court of the Republic of Colombia has power to initiate legislation. The Attorney General of the Colombian Republic is elected for a term of four years and cannot be re-elected for a second term.

During the meeting, the President of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Colombia proposed to conclude a co-operation agreement in the near future between the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office and the Colombian Attorney General’s Office. This step, according to Francisco Javier Ricaurte Gomez, is necessary to jointly fight against grave crimes and to share experience in the protection of human rights.

Russian Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika upheld the proposal of the Colombian party to sign the co-operation agreement and stressed that at present international legal assistance was given top-priority.

In his turn, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia to the Russian Federation Diego Jose Tobon kindly invited Yuri Chaika to visit the Republic of Colombia for a meeting with the Colombian Attorney General.

In conclusion, both parties expressed their confidence that the meeting would further facilitate efficient professional ties and develop a dialogue on a wide range of legal issues.
