Visit of Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika to the Federal Republic of Germany
Today during the official visit of Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika to the Federal Republic of Germany, he has met with Federal Minister of Justice of Germany Mrs. Brigitte Zypries.
The meeting took place in the Federal Ministry of Justice of Germany in Berlin.
The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation thanked Mrs. Brigitte Zypries for warm welcome and noted “positive tendency in the development of relations which were gathering momentum every year”.
Yuri Chaika reminded that the last meeting with the Federal Minister of Justice of Germany, which took place in June of 2007 in St. Petersburg, resulted in signature of the Joint Statement on Cooperation between the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and the Federal Ministry of Justice of Germany. According to the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, “efficient application of the Joint Statement is proved not only by enhanced cooperation in the field of extradition and legal assistance in criminal matters but also by participation of officers of the Prosecution Service of Russia in the activities organized by the German Fund of International Legal Cooperation”.
The Prosecutor General specifically noted successful development of cooperation between both institutions in the field of criminal proceedings. “The Federative Republic of Germany takes one of the leading places among the EU member states in satisfaction of the Russian extradition requests”, — said Yuri Chaika.
In the course of the prolonged talks the Heads exchanged their views on a wide range of mutually interesting issues. In particular, they discussed the role of the Prosecution Service in the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
In order to enhance the efficiency of bilateral contacts, Mr. Yuri Chaika and Mrs. Brigitte Zypries signed the Program of Cooperation between the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and the Federal Ministry of Justice of the Federative Republic of Germany for 2008-2009.
The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation underlined that performance of joint activities for the exchange of experience between these two institutions defined by this Program was an important condition for joint and coordinated actions of Russia and Germany in the protection of human rights and freedoms and also in the fight against crime. These activities will be carried out in the near future.
Earlier during his visit, Yuri Chaika has met with Prosecutor General in the Federal Supreme Court of the Federative Republic of Germany Mrs. Monika Harms and also with President of the Federal Supreme Court of the Federative Republic of Germany Mr. Klaus Tolksdorf.
