Joint declaration of heads of prosecution services of BRICS and MERCOSUR member states was signed upon the initiative of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yury Chaika

A joint Declaration of the heads of prosecution services of BRICS and MERCOSUR (Common Market of the South America) member states on violations of environmental legislation was signed upon the initiative of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yury Chaika.
The signing took place during a meeting of heads of prosecutors of these countries in Brasilia, where issues of violations of environmental legislation were discussed. The Declaration was the first joint document signed by the BRICS and MERCOSUR representatives.
The document addresses the need to implement immediate environmental protection measures, including those substantiated by the Paris Climate Agreement. A key factor in the successful implementation of this Agreement is the effective application of legislation in each of the states signatories.
The document emphasizes historical and fundamental role of the prosecution authorities in environmental protection, as well as the key task of ensuring full compliance with the legislation in this area. It underlines the importance of sharing of experience among prosecutors in the area of environmental protection and, in particular, among specialist environmental prosecutors.
In order to achieve these goals, the states are invited to unite their efforts to build a society based on respect for environmental legislation, to work jointly to achieve the goals endorsed at the international level, to implement comprehensive measures to protect the Earth's ecological systems, in particular, to preserve clean air and water, fertile soils, diversity of flora and fauna, genetic heritage.
The document was signed by Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yury Chaika, Prosecutor General of the People's Republic of China Cao Jianming, National Director of Public Prosecutions of the Republic of South Africa Sean Kevin Abrahams, Attorney General of the Argentine Republic Alejandra Magdalena Gils Carbó, Attorney General of the Republic of Paraguay Francisco Javier Diaz Veron, Attorney General of the Republic of Peru Pablo Sanchez Velarde, Attorney General of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay Jorge Diaz Almeida.
